SINOPSIS
The ferocious talent and extraordinary life of flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya burn up the screen in director Jocelyn Ajami’s documentary about a woman who changed the rules of her art forever. Born in 1913 into Barcelona’s impoverished Gypsy community, Amaya first performed publicly at the age of four. By her teens, she was an international sensation. Her fiercely sensual, heel-stomping, hip-thrusting performance style thrilled and shocked audiences for its challenge to flamenco’s traditional gender roles, and Ajami deftly deploys rarely seen clips from Amaya’s films to attest to her hypnotic presence. At the same time, home movies and the reminiscences of family and friends reveal the intimate passions and personal struggles of the greatest flamenco dancer of all time.
